City staff briefed the council on public-safety budget items tied to the Lone Peak public-safety district. Staff (S9) said the Lone Peak board approved a 5% wage adjustment for police and fire, including merit/step components for fire staff and market adjustments for police. Chief requests identified a supervisory/lieutenant role to address a supervisory shortage — the budgeted change would add one supervisor position and an associated vehicle.
Staff reported the use of some Lone Peak fund balance to purchase vehicles this year (a fourth patrol vehicle to support the new supervisor plus two motorcycles) instead of leasing, and described a $20,000 line item for a report-writing software tool that automates report templates from camera footage, which staff believe may free up patrol capacity. Council members asked whether vehicle purchases replace planned leases (staff said yes, they replace rather than add to typical lease cycles) and sought assurances that technology purchases will be thoroughly vetted.
No formal vote was taken in the work session. Staff will bring Lone Peak tentative budget items to the joint board meeting and include final recommendations in the city’s tentative budget schedule.
