Snohomish County OKs $385,250 for feasibility study on synthetic turf at Maltby Community Park

The Snohomish County Council on March 18 unanimously approved an interlocal agreement authorizing up to $385,250 to support a feasibility study on converting grass sports fields to synthetic turf at Maltby Community Park.

Council staff Debbie Mott, presenting the proposal, said the agreement would provide financial assistance to the East County Park and Recreation District and authorize the county’s Conservation and Natural Resources director to execute amendments as needed. "The proposed ILA provides financial assistance to the district for a feasibility study to convert grass sports fields to synthetic turf at Maltby Community Park," Mott said.

The staff report said the interlocal agreement would take effect on execution and remain in force through Dec. 31, 2026, and that the total county contribution would not exceed $385,250. The council opened public testimony on the item and recorded no speakers either in person or online.

After brief follow-up, during which a council member said they had received information on turf infill circulated to the full council and that their questions had been answered, a motion to approve Ordinance 26-006 was moved and seconded. The council conducted a roll-call vote; all five members recorded affirmative votes and the ordinance passed 5–0.

The council did not set further conditions in the hearing. The interlocal agreement, as described by staff, allows the county to support the district’s feasibility work and gives staff limited authority to execute amendments; the ordinance text specifies the price cap and the agreement’s term. The council proceeded to its next agenda item and adjourned after passing a second ordinance later in the meeting.
