Board sets hearing for Title VI Indian Education grant application; district cites staffing and declining enrollment in tribes

Doctor Young presented the district’s annual Title VI Indian Education grant application and the board on April 13 set a public hearing for April 27, 2026 as required to accept public input before submission.
Young said the grant supports culturally related academic needs for American Indian and Alaska Native students, provides two fully funded FTE and partial funding for three additional FTE (including educational liaisons and tutors at Liberty and Lowe’s Hills), and funds mentoring, tutoring, home visits and family supports. Young stated the district is seeking $7,076,602 this year and said last year’s award was $89,369. He attributed the change to declining enrollment in tribal rolls.
Board members voted to set the required public hearing; the motion passed 6-0. The hearing will be held on 04/27/2026 at the Educational Service Center.
