Planning Commission adopts downtown development district clarifications and forwards amendments to city council
Summary
Commissioners adopted tweaks to the downtown development district (Appendix A of the Unified Development Code) including administrative procedure changes, rooftop screening and frontage clarifications and forwarded them to the city council for public hearing.
The Mobile City Planning Commission on April 16 adopted a set of clarifying amendments to Appendix A of the Downtown Development District chapter of the Unified Development Code and voted to forward the changes to the city council for public hearing.
Staff described the amendments as targeted clarifications and fixes to the major revision adopted by council on Jan. 20. Changes include shifting authority for minor administrative deviations to the director (from a consolidated review committee), clarifying curb cut and vehicular access standards and screening requirements, specifying rooftop‑equipment screening and visibility rules, and clarifying frontage and stoop allowances on secondary frontages.
Staff said the changes were developed with consultants and downtown stakeholders and that no public comments had been received online or in writing for this set of tweaks. The commission voted to adopt the amendments and forward them to the city council for formal consideration and public hearing.
Next steps: staff will transmit the adopted amendments to city council and schedule them for council public hearing and possible adoption.
