Shelby Parker was sworn in as police chief of the city of Olympia on March 24, 2026, after a ceremony at the council chambers where City Manager Jay Bernie introduced her and the mayor administered the oath.
"I, Shelby Parker, do solemnly swear," Parker said as she repeated the oath before family and city leaders. Bernie highlighted Parker’s more than two decades of service in Olympia, her graduation from the FBI National Academy, and a senior management credential from the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission.
Parker introduced family members who were present and thanked them. She told the council she is “humbled” and said she looks forward to community engagement, announcing a public meeting next Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the council chambers to share her vision and invite dialogue.
Council members offered unanimous congratulations. Council member Madron recalled working with Parker in the field and praised her leadership; Council member Gilman and others emphasized Parker’s character and commitment to the department and to community relationships.
The mayor recessed the meeting to allow attendees to congratulate the new chief. The council did not take action tied to her appointment during the ceremony; the event served as a formal swearing-in and public introduction.
