Snohomish County Council unanimously approves Vesakhi/Khalsa Day recognition and forms fiscal work group

The Snohomish County Council unanimously approved a ceremonial resolution recognizing Vesakhi (Khalsa Day) on April 14, 2026, and a joint resolution to form a work group to review recommendations of the county's fiscal sustainability task force during its April 8 session.

Council members invited a speaker from the Sikh community to address the body before the vote. "Vesakhi is not just a celebration," said Harjeet of Bothell, speaking for the local Sikh community, describing the holiday as a tradition of "courage, integrity, and community service" and inviting the public to celebrations in Marysville and Bothell on April 17–19.

Following the remarks, Councilmember Mead moved to approve Resolution 26-009 recognizing the holiday; the motion carried 5-0. The council then took action on joint Resolution 26-010 supporting formation of a work group to review recommendations from the fiscal sustainability task force. Councilmember Aering moved approval; the motion passed 5-0.

The meeting record shows the votes on both resolutions were voice votes with no recorded opposition. The session also approved the consent agenda and administrative Motion 26-159 without discussion, each by unanimous voice vote.

Council members paused for a brief photo recess after the Vesakhi recognition and presented a service award to Cassie Fannin for her long service in communications; council members and staff praised her work and tenure at the county.

All actions recorded during the meeting were routine or ceremonial; the council recessed until a 10:30 a.m. public hearing.
