A Bonney Lake resident who identified herself as Jennifer Jones asked the council whether the Bonney Lake Police Department has written guidance for responding to requests from federal immigration authorities and whether that guidance is public.
"Does the Bonney Lake Police Department have any written guidance on how it responds to your request from federal immigration authorities? And is that guidance public?" Jones asked during the virtual public-comment portion of the meeting.
She also asked whether immigration status factors into routine calls such as accidents or wellness checks, and whether the council would consider clarifying policy so residents know what to expect. Jones asked if the council would consider a legislative package prohibiting federal immigration agents from wearing masks or conducting raids on city property or limiting city data-sharing with federal immigration authorities in a model similar to Philadelphia.
City staff said they would follow up by email with answers to her questions; the council did not take immediate action or adopt a new policy during the meeting.
The council's public-comment instructions at the meeting noted staff would listen but not answer live questions; staff offered to provide written responses after the meeting.
