"I set a draft of an ordinance, to just be reviewed that a moratorium on data centers in 12 months," the proposer said, noting uncertainty about water usage, power requirements and how other communities are handling regulations. The proposer asked that the council consider a first reading at the next meeting.
Other council members responded that the question could be handled by referring the draft to a committee for study so that the planning and zoning commission and city staff can develop appropriate standards. The city consultant for planning reportedly said there were no current plans for a data center in the community, a point cited by one councilor during discussion.
No vote or formal action was taken on a moratorium during the meeting; council members agreed to review the draft and consider committee referral and potential placement on a future agenda.
