Rudy Lopez was sworn in Tuesday as chief of the Ontario Police Department, and in remarks after the oath he pledged to continue wellness programs and expand training and community partnerships.
The ceremony included presentations from representatives of state elected officials and local leaders. "I'm honored to recognize Chief Rudy Lopez on the occasion of his swearing in," said Elysses Nara, representing Assemblymember Robert Garcia, while Roxanna Grama, district director for Assemblymember Michelle Rodriguez, presented a certificate congratulating Lopez. District Attorney Jason Anderson called Lopez "unbelievably sharp, smart, professional" and praised the city's succession planning.
Lopez, who the mayor said joined Ontario PD in 2002 after starting in law enforcement with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department in 1998, outlined his priorities in a roughly 10-minute address. He thanked mentors and family members and committed to continuing the department's officer-wellness efforts, training and investment in resources. "I'm going to emphasize unity within the department and the community as well," Lopez said. "The badge does not represent authority. It represents service."
Chaplain Mark Ortiz offered an invocation that framed the evening as a celebration of Lopez's career, and a prerecorded message from State Senator Susan Rubio congratulated Lopez and noted he is the first Latino to lead the city of Ontario.
Mayor Leon recessed the council for a short reception after the oath and said the council would return to finish its business. There were no formal policy votes tied directly to Lopez’s appointment during the ceremony; the event transitioned to the regular meeting agenda after the reception.
