The Trousdale County Board of Education voted to approve an FBLA field trip to Nissan Stadium scheduled for Nov. 8 and a $25 student fee to cover tournament entry and related costs. The approval followed board discussion about whether substitute teacher pay for club trips should be covered by clubs or the district.
During the discussion, a board member called the trip “a very good thing” for students’ career and leadership development. District staff noted that regionals are required to advance to state competitions and said the trip gives students a chance to compete in job-interview and public-speaking events as well as to observe a professional venue.
Board members raised concerns about equity and precedent after hearing that clubs often fundraise to cover substitute costs. One board member suggested letting district staff compile figures on how many field trips and substitute days various student organizations use and present options at the next work session. The Chair asked staff to involve principals, notably the high school principal, when preparing that analysis.
The motion to approve the FBLA trip and student fee was made as recorded in the meeting packet and carried by voice vote.
The board also discussed how extracurricular fundraisers (including concessions) support some club travel and said any district-level policy on paying substitute costs would need guardrails so assistance could be applied consistently across clubs.
The board did not specify additional funding changes at the meeting; staff were directed to report back with figures and recommendations at a future work session.
