Summary
Morton junior-high volleyball and high-school wrestling teams were recognized at the board meeting for strong seasons, including an eighth-grade volleyball state runner-up finish and multiple individual wrestling state qualifiers and high win totals.
The Morton CUSD 709 board of education recognized student athletes from the district’s volleyball and wrestling programs during its regular meeting.
Junior-high coaches told trustees the eighth-grade volleyball program has been to the state series repeatedly during the past four years, and this year’s squad finished second at the state tournament. Coaches credited a sustained program structure and named coaching staff including Coach Williams, Emma Odom and Coach Cox for the teams’ repeated success. The coach listed the roster of players being honored and emphasized the program’s emphasis on preparation, scouting and team culture.
Morton High School’s wrestling coach reviewed a season that produced four IHSA state qualifiers, multiple state placers, and several individuals with 40-plus wins. The coach highlighted sophomores and seniors with standout seasons, noting individual results at tournaments across the region and national travel opportunities. He singled out Ben Shaffer and Harrison Day for individual recognition, outlining their seasons and post‑graduation plans discussed at the meeting.
Board members and administrators congratulated the athletes and coaches, and attendees were invited to meet the teams and receive pins at the close of the recognition.
The board moved on to business items after the recognition portion of the agenda.
