Historic board plans tours, QR signage and low-cost 'Century House' plaques

Summary
The Grand Island advisory board agreed to develop walking-tour materials, QR-code panels, interpretive signage and a low-cost 'Century House' plaque option; members discussed production costs, sample plaques ($55 in a model program) and distribution plans for an upcoming Arbor Day/tour event.
The Grand Island Historic Preservation Advisory Board also devoted part of its meeting to public outreach, agreeing to produce walking-tour materials, QR-code digital content and a simple plaque program for houses more than 100 years old.
Members confirmed dates for upcoming walking tours and a 20-minute presentation the board will give at an event; the Chair said she will prepare a half-sheet handout listing tour dates and White Oak locations. A committee member demonstrated a draft QR-code PDF and proposed 12-by-16 metal panel options for interpretive signage.
The board discussed a low-cost plaque program modeled on a neighboring town’s 'Century House' offering. “It’s $55, so it’s not outrageous,” a committee member said when describing how homeowners could apply and pay for a plaque that would be listed on a board-managed page and seen by visitors. Members agreed the plaque program could be optional and locally branded and discussed logistics for producing sample signs and ordering a small batch if there is interest.
Other items included locating and acquiring four two-drawer file cabinets plus a counter for the historian’s office (marketplace price $100), and finalizing a packet of photographs to illustrate the Ferry Village character. Board members discussed practicalities (who would pick up cabinets, when town staff could assist) and set a follow-up plan to gather photos and sample sign designs for review at the next meeting.
The board also reviewed requirements and timing for the Nike-base and other interpretive signs pending state review; members agreed not to finalize sign designs until the Nike-base submission is cleared.
