Council schedules public hearing for Falls Fabricating's Minnesota Investment Fund compliance-extension request

The council agreed to call a public hearing for Jan. 20, 2026, to consider recommending a one-year compliance extension for Falls Fabricating LLC under its 2023 Minnesota Investment Fund (MIF) grant agreement.
Staff explained the MIF agreement required Falls Fabricating to increase permanent employment by 27 full-time-equivalent positions. Falls Fabricating has not yet met that target and is requesting a one-year extension; staff recommended calling a hearing so the council may consider forwarding a recommendation to the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development. Staff clarified the MIF funds come from the state and are funneled through the city; they do not come from city funds.
Council members asked what happens if Falls Fabricating does not meet the target after the extension; staff said repayment or reduction in grant retention is determined by the percentage of the target met at the program milestone and that the extension is a one-time accommodation under standard MIF practice.
