Board pauses decision on Wednesday K–12 late start after split survey results

District staff proposed changing Wednesday schedules so all students would start two hours late on Wednesdays, a change administration said would simplify family schedules and ease transportation challenges.
"Your proposal is to move to a consistent K–12 two hour late start every Wednesday," the staff presentation said, noting the district had received 1,208 survey responses: "48% pro, 43.5% con, and 8.4% no opinion or neutral."
Board members raised questions about childcare impacts, supervision for activities and the effect on elementary students’ prime learning time. Several members said transporting multiple-age children and activity supervision are important concerns. One member urged the board not to delay addressing a nonnegotiable transportation inequity at the middle school: students arriving as late as 10 a.m. because of bus routing.
Members generally agreed to pause the proposal for next year, request more study of options (including moving middle-school start times or studying Monday alternatives), gather additional public feedback and allow new administration and the incoming superintendent time to weigh in. Staff offered to provide further analysis on transportation cost savings and to return with more options and community engagement.
