Cherokee County approves contract extension for county attorney, hires new DSS attorney and pays $10,000 invoice

During a closed session at its Feb. 16 meeting, the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners approved a contract extension for the county attorney and added $15,000 annually to the county attorney’s base salary for additional services to Cherokee County Department of Social Services (DSS). The board voted, according to the minutes, to extend the contract through July 1, 2029 and approved the salary addition by unanimous vote.
Board members also discussed qualifications for and the hiring of Mr. Elliott Dugger as the county’s new DSS attorney. After returning to open session, the board approved hiring Elliott Dugger by unanimous vote.
The minutes also record discussion of and approval to pay a $10,000 invoice to a vendor who had served as legal counsel to former Sheriff Dustin Smith; the minutes note that neither that vendor nor the contract had been previously approved by the county and indicated the vendor had been engaged only by the former sheriff. The board approved the payment by unanimous vote in open session.
