Dr. Verlita White, superintendent of Roanoke City Public Schools, urged students and families to attend the RCPS Works job fair on Thursday, April 23, from 3 to 6:30 p.m. at the Berglund Center.
"Our goal and our promise has always been clear. We want you to graduate with a diploma and a resume with real world skills and experiences that will serve you for a lifetime," White said, announcing what she described as the fifth annual RCPS Works event.
The superintendent said the fair will feature more than 70 businesses and organizations from sectors including banking, health care, construction, food service and government. White said students will be able to meet employers face to face, "explore opportunities across industries, and even interview on the spot," and that the event will provide on-site resume help and interview coaching so attendees will "feel confident and prepared to meet with employers."
White also highlighted supports for students with disabilities, saying transition resources will be available to help with independent living and job support as part of post–high school planning. She invited families with younger children to visit Roanoke Summer Connect at the same event to learn about summer programs across the Roanoke Valley.
Logistics White announced include free transportation to the Berglund Center, free food and prizes. Attendees are asked to bring identification and to register in advance at rcps.info/rcpsworks for event details and sign-up information.
"I want to thank our business and our community partners for supporting this effort for 5 years in a row," White said, framing the fair as an investment in the next generation of Roanoke's workforce. The event is presented by Roanoke City Public Schools; additional details and registration are available at the district's website.
