Summary
After a hearing and supporting testimony from Sheriff Beau Stahlman, the commission unanimously approved a class A misdemeanor waiver for jailer Corey Eason related to a 1992 arrest that resulted in deferred adjudication and dismissal; commissioners recorded a roll-call vote.
The Texas Commission on Law Enforcement granted a class A misdemeanor waiver to Brazoria County jailer Corey Eason following a public hearing and a unanimous roll-call vote.
Sheriff Beau Stahlman told the commission that Eason, who was hired in July 2020, disclosed a 1992 arrest for carrying a firearm in a deposit bag while transporting business proceeds. The charge ended in deferred adjudication and dismissal after one year of probation. Sheriff Stahlman said the office uncovered the issue in a routine review and conducted a full re-investigation; he argued the arrest was an isolated incident from more than 30 years ago and urged the commission to approve a waiver rather than cancel the individual's license.
Eason addressed the commission and accepted responsibility for the earlier incident, noting he completed a basic peace-officer course afterward and has since lived and worked in the community. Commissioners asked staff and counsel about whether the conduct would be criminal under current law; legal staff said the statute as written then criminalized carrying a handgun in some circumstances, but modern interpretation and case law have narrowed similar statutes.
The commission took a roll-call vote on the waiver. Commissioners present recorded their votes in favor (see roll-call list). The presiding officer congratulated Sheriff Stahlman and Eason and noted the commission's expectation that Eason continue to meet professional standards.
Next steps: TCOLE recorded the waiver and will proceed with reappointment steps as described by the sheriff's office.
