Board approves salary-scale revisions for facilities and transportation staff

Tom Brewster, who presented the proposal, told the board it added a third objective to keep pay comparable with surrounding counties and to fold professional stipends into base wages. "Tonight, we present the final reading for the proposal to revise salary scales for facility and transportation positions," Brewster said. He said the change will include a title update—recommended from "builder carpenter" to "maintenance technician"—and an added cost of $40,000 for the remainder of this year and $80,000 for next year.
Board members asked clarifying questions before approving the measure by roll call. The board clerk recorded seven votes in favor and the motion carried.
Why it matters: Board members framed the revision as a retention and recruitment tool for positions that are difficult to fill. Several trustees and administrators said integrating stipends into base pay reduces turnover and supports operational reliability across buildings.
The action follows broader budget conversations at the meeting in which trustees emphasized pay parity, support-staff compensation and repairing aging facilities. Administration said the revised scales will be incorporated into the operating budget and that affected positions will be reclassified where appropriate.
Votes at a glance: The meeting also recorded other routine approvals by roll call, each carried with seven votes in favor: payment of bills, adoption of a general music textbook, and approval of the 2025–26 career and technical education advisory committee membership.
The board next scheduled further budget work and asked administration for cost estimates and phased plans for longer-term compensation changes and facility repairs.
