Mechanicsburg Borough Council discussed a pair of public-works technology proposals and received grant updates during its Feb. 17 committee session.
Engineer Jongezoon described a Pennoni pavement-management proposal, not to exceed $13,500, that would apply AI software to assess the condition of every road and alley in the Borough to track deterioration over time. Councilman Mina asked about data security; Jongezoon stated all data will be securely protected. Council also considered a Pennoni curb-and-sidewalk GIS dashboard proposal, not to exceed $20,000, which Jongezoon said is intended for internal use to help staff address resident inquiries about sidewalks and curbs.
Separately, PEM Arnold reported that the Borough applied for and received two ARLE (Automated Red Light Enforcement / Advance Traffic) grant awards: one to implement leading pedestrian intervals and retime the downtown signal system and another to improve pedestrian safety at Williams Grove Road and Broad Street. The two grants total $680,000.
Superintendent Huey updated the council on the sanitary-department degritter project (approximately 50% complete) and Lieutenant Curtis briefed the council on the county radio-system upgrade and ongoing training. The council did not finalize contract awards for the Pennoni proposals during the meeting; follow-up procurement steps were indicated.
