Middle-schooler credited with saving her grandfather recognized by Jersey Shore Area SD board

At its April 13 meeting, the Jersey Shore Area School District Board of School Directors formally recognized sixth-grader Leila Gallagher for using CPR skills she learned in class to assist her grandfather.
Superintendent Dr. Ulmer told the board Gallagher was credited by her family and by county commissioners after finding her grandfather unresponsive at his home. Dr. Ulmer said school instruction in CPR played a decisive role in the outcome and introduced Gallagher and instructor Patty Hess to the board for recognition.
Patty Hess presented Gallagher with a CPR certificate during the meeting. Gallagher told the board she took the class to explore a career path and said the training gave her confidence in an emergency: “I felt stronger and more confident when I was helping my grandfather because I had a cheerleader and a teacher in my mind the whole time,” Gallagher said. She thanked Hess for the instruction and said she will never forget that moment.
Dr. Ulmer and board members thanked Gallagher and Hess for attending the meeting. The board placed the moment on the record as an example of how school health instruction can have real-world impact; no board action was required beyond the recognition.
