Peoria mayor urges action on speeding after string of crashes; resident warns about lithium battery fire risks

Summary
Mayor Beck told the council recent fatal and near-fatal crashes have created an urgent public-safety concern and asked staff to pursue alternatives to slow traffic on Happy Valley; a resident during call to the public cited a prior lithium battery fire at an SRP substation and warned of hazards to first responders.
Mayor Beck used his April 7 report to highlight community safety after several recent crashes and urged action to reduce speeding on Happy Valley and other arterial roads.
“We're going to look at alternatives and all alternatives, to be able to try to slow people down on Happy Valley,” the mayor said, describing two serious accidents in a three-day span and urging residents to talk to family members about safe driving. He recounted one crash that killed a 16-year-old student and other collisions that hospitalized several people, and he described mounting stress on first responders who repeatedly attend severe incidents.
The mayor called for community vigilance and said the city will examine measures beyond enforcement, noting that placing the number of officers necessary to patrol the corridor continually would be impractical.
During the call to the public, resident Shannon Simo urged civility toward staff and raised public-safety concerns citywide. Simo also pointed to an Oct. 1, 2025 lithium-battery fire at an SRP substation on Northern Avenue that she said required defensive firefighting and released hazardous fumes such as hydrogen fluoride, carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide, and she said such incidents put firefighters and other first responders at risk.
“We've had an increase [in] accidents,” Simo said, and she urged the council and community to take the risks seriously.
The council did not take formal action on traffic measures during the meeting but the mayor said staff and leadership will pursue options to address speed-related dangers and return with potential approaches.
