The Satellite Beach Youth Council held its first official meeting Oct. 28, 2019, swearing in members and electing leadership as the group set initial priorities for outreach and environmental projects.
Alex LaFortune was nominated and elected chair after a nomination and second; the council then confirmed Charlotte Barnes as vice chair by voice vote. Following the votes, LaFortune assumed leadership of the meeting. During the officer-selection discussion, members described their experience with student organizations and Robert’s Rules of Order as part of their qualifications.
City Clerk Webb Pierce briefed the council on parliamentary procedure and the duties of the chair, saying motions must be made, seconded and then discussed before a vote. Pierce also reiterated the Sunshine Law’s limits on off‑meeting communications and public‑records obligations for emails and social media posts.
During citizen comment, Serena Videla, who identified herself as an alternate youth council member, offered to serve as secretary and described prior experience keeping minutes for a school club. The council indicated interest in volunteer support for clerking and recordkeeping.
Members began brainstorming mission ideas and near‑term projects, with frequent suggestions to focus on youth engagement, lagoon cleanups and social‑media outreach to raise awareness. Staff encouraged collaboration with the city’s sustainability and beautification boards and offered contacts and limited startup budget support for youth projects.
The council agreed to meet monthly (the fourth Monday, with no meeting in December or May), to draft mission statements and bring shirt and outreach proposals to the next meeting. The meeting adjourned after the group sketched a list of next steps and volunteer roles.
