Middletown increases volunteer firefighter and EMS stipend; program authorized

Township staff reported 121 qualifying volunteers across four fire companies and the Pennell Middletown Emergency Squad in 2025. The stipend allocation in the 2026 budget was increased from a historical $250 per volunteer to $599 per volunteer. “This is an important program, especially for volunteers who live outside Middletown and cannot access the local tax‑credit incentives,” township staff said.
Supervisors and public commenters praised the program as a cost‑effective way to sustain emergency coverage. The motion to authorize the program passed 3–0; staff said they will work with the volunteer agencies and the township public information officer on outreach to potential recruits.
