Superintendent Powers described a multi-stage search that produced more than 30 applicants and two finalists. Powers said Watson "was the chosen finalist" and noted she has spent her career in the district in roles including teacher, administrator and principal at the middle and high school levels. The committee moved and seconded the superintendent’s recommendation and approved the appointment by voice vote.
Separately, Powers told the committee that DESE granted a waiver related to missed school days after multiple weather cancellations. The waiver allows Rainham Middle School to avoid adding an extra day to the calendar; as a result the committee approved Tuesday, June 23, 2026, as the last day of school for grades 1 through 11.
What happens next: Watson will formally begin as assistant superintendent on July 1 and district leadership said they will spend the remaining months transitioning responsibilities with current staff. The district will publicize details of the transition and continue work on corrective actions from the recent DESE review.
