West Covina appoints Greg McKeown as new fire chief

Greg McKeown, a 30-year career firefighter with experience at the Orange County Fire Authority and in the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, was appointed West Covina’s fire chief on March 17 after council confirmation.
Acting City Manager introduced McKeown and described a competitive recruitment and interview process. McKeown told the council he would focus on response times, strengthening training and fleet management and increasing community engagement: “I will be present. I will be at your events. I will be part of Rotary,” he said.
Council members asked about station construction, fleet use and leveraging ambulances and mutual-aid operations to generate service and revenue; McKeown described prior station-construction experience and emphasized a fleet-management plan to balance vehicle use and maintenance.
A roll-call vote confirmed the appointment; councilmembers praised outgoing acting Chief Brown’s service as the department transitions. The appointment takes effect immediately; the city manager will work with the department to finalize transition steps and implementation timelines.
