The Troy School District Board of Education approved a package of policy revisions at its April 13 meeting, most described by administration as minor updates to align with new state model language.
Administrators said the most substantive change is a revision to the kindergarten eligibility date: children who are 5 years old by Aug. 1 will now be eligible for kindergarten. The board formally approved the policies effective April 13.
Board members asked how the district is handling artificial intelligence in classrooms. Administration said the district has formed an AI task force, provided professional development for staff and adopted a model-state policy as a baseline; it emphasized that practice and policy will continue to evolve. "When a teacher assigns a project, they're able to think about artificial intelligence and how it could be applied and either encourage or discourage or both its use depending on what they're trying to achieve," administration said.
Trustees approved the policy changes on a roll-call vote; administrators said they will continue to support teachers through professional development and policy refinement as state guidance changes.
The board also reviewed related routine agenda items concurrently with the policy vote.
