Board hears curriculum committee updates, STEM partnership and reading program adoption

At the April 10 meeting the curriculum committee reviewed school performance reports and program proposals, including a J&J STEM volunteer program that will bring industry professionals into the high school engineering and health‑science academies.
Board members reported that McGraw Hill reading materials will be provided for K–5 as part of a systematic approach to early literacy. The committee emphasized professional development for teachers and a coordinated lesson structure focused on phonics, decoding and scaffolding.
The committee also highlighted identification efforts this year, noting that "we have identified 52" students who will be included in gifted and talented opportunities despite previously having IEPs or being multilingual learners. The committee characterized this work as an effort to broaden access and better meet student needs.
Presenters said partnerships and volunteer involvement aim to expand exposure to career paths and provide hands‑on experiences that supplement academy coursework. The community will receive a notice this week explaining how to access the New Jersey Department of Education school performance reports the committee reviewed.
