The Souderson Area School District board announced it expects to appoint Assistant Superintendent Dr. Christopher Hay as the district’s next superintendent, with the board anticipating a vote at its April 30 meeting and a three‑year contract taking effect July 1, 2026. The president said the decision followed multiple executive sessions and an evaluation of options that included an outside search.
Board leadership emphasized continuity. “National research strongly and consistently shows that continuity and stability in leadership has a direct positive correlation with student achievement,” the president said, and said the board had deliberated the pros and cons of an external search before coalescing around an internal appointment. Superintendent Dr. Frank Gallagher also praised Dr. Hay’s long service and partnership with district initiatives.
Dr. Hay, who spoke to the board, said he has worked in district administration for more than two decades and pledged collaboration. “I bleed red … I couldn’t be prouder to take on this role for the school district,” he said, expressing a goal of keeping “every learner in mind.”
The appointment follows several executive sessions the board reported were held to discuss personnel and legal matters. Community members at public comment urged transparency around the selection process; one commenter, Mitch Rothholtz, asked the board to include parents, staff and students through surveys and listening sessions to shape the leadership profile before final selection.
Board materials and the president’s announcement list the anticipated next step as a formal vote at the April 30 board meeting; until that vote, the appointment is expected but not final.
