Committee reports bill to bar under-18s from hemp-focused establishments

The Senate Committee on Judiciary B on April 7 voted to report Senate Bill 510 favorably after a brief presentation and industry comment.
Senator Owen, presenting SB 510 on behalf of Senator Morris, said the bill would prevent anyone under 18 from entering premises whose principal commodity is alcohol or hemp products — a change intended to treat 'hemp bars' similarly to alcohol-serving establishments when the principal business is intoxicating product.
John Williams of the Beer Industry League of Louisiana testified in support, saying that as hemp consumable retail licenses were issued, some establishments began offering on-premise consumption but lacked age restrictions. "Some of the establishments are actually starting to try to serve for on premises consumption, and they don't have any restrictions on age restrictions," Williams said, describing the practical problem the bill aims to fix.
The committee recorded no amendments and, after Senator Talbot moved to report the bill favorably, reported SB 510 without objection. The bill will proceed according to standard legislative scheduling procedures.
The committee adjourned after concluding the day's agenda.
