Parent urges board to halt planned Del Sol student reassignment amid communication concerns

A Jurupa Unified parent told the board on Dec. 9 she and other families are mobilizing to stop what she described as a district decision to move seventh‑ and eighth‑grade students from Del Sol Academy to another middle school.

Janice Mulligan said she learned of the change through social media and that many parents were not adequately informed. "I recently found out that the seventh and eighth grade is gonna be moving to another middle school," Mulligan said. "A lot of parents don't even know what's going on."

Mulligan described emotional impacts on children and said parents were collecting petition signatures. She called the change "false advertising" because she said the school had been promoted as serving K‑8, and asked for better communication and for the board to reconsider.

President Melissa Rangel responded that board business is conducted in public and that "nothing happened behind closed doors," noting that discussions about Del Sol would have occurred on the dais and in public records if they had taken place. Rangel invited Mulligan to submit more information by email or at a future meeting.

Another speaker who identified concerns during public comment further urged the board to reconsider the move and described logistic burdens such as longer bus rides and later release times for students.

The board did not take action on the item at the meeting. Trustees encouraged parents to engage with staff and to follow the district's channels for information and next steps.
