Summary
Sergeant Lugo told the DDA April 13 that recent events including Garlic Fest and Savor the Avenue were largely peaceful but reported four arrests related to day drinking and two strong-arm robberies (one suspect caught); a missing elderly man with Alzheimer’s was located and no major protest incidents occurred.
Sergeant Lugo of the Delray Beach Police Clean and Safe Unit briefed the Downtown Development Authority on April 13 about recent public-safety activity tied to downtown events.
Lugo, the unit’s new sergeant, said a No Kings Day protest drew roughly 20 to 30 people and concluded without incidents. He reported that major events such as Garlic Fest and Savor the Avenue were well attended and did not produce notable problems. "No incidents," he said of the protest and described event days as generally manageable.
Lugo reported four arrests last month tied to day drinking enforcement and noted two strong-arm robberies: one in the 100–200 block of Northeast 1st Avenue where a victim was pushed to the ground and had her purse taken, and a second attempted robbery in the 200 block of Northwestern Avenue. He said the suspect involved in the second robbery was apprehended in Riviera and has prior history with local authorities. Lugo also said an adult male with Alzheimer’s briefly went missing during St. Patrick’s Day activities but was located.
The sergeant said bar-regulation enforcement and partnership operations continue, and that police remain engaged with event organizers to mitigate risks as downtown activity increases.
Why it matters: downtown promotional events have brought visitors but also require coordinated enforcement and outreach; the DDA received the update but no new public-safety directive was recorded in the meeting minutes at this session.
The meeting continued with other partner reports after the police update.
