Summary
City leaders presented proclamations recognizing National Library Week and Child Abuse Prevention Month; library and child-protection representatives highlighted community programs, events and county data and asked the council to continue prioritizing services for children and families.
The West Sacramento City Council issued two proclamations during the meeting.
Council member Norma Alcala read a proclamation designating April 2026 as National Library Week and representatives from the Arthur F. Turner Community Library described upcoming events, including Dia de los NiOs/Dia de los Libros, discovery kits the library will circulate and partnerships with local early-childhood programs. Krista Canariato, East Yolo Regional Manager, thanked the council for support and invited members to upcoming library events.
The council also proclaimed April 2026 as Child Abuse Prevention Month. Police Chief Rob Strange described county-level child-welfare data and framed prevention as a shared community responsibility. Sarah Gavin of CommuniCare and Jenna Bellahai of the Yolo County Childrens Alliance urged culturally responsive, equity-rooted prevention and noted that Yolo County investigated 725 child-abuse/neglect allegations in the prior year, with 125 children entering foster care.
Council members thanked presenters and emphasized that proclamations are a starting point for year-round attention to prevention, services and cross-agency coordination. The council took a group photo with proclamation recipients before proceeding to other business.
