Summary
The committee unanimously accepted a $50,000 donation to fund Bruce Freeman Trail design work, approved quarterly budget transfers, and approved a PTG-funded 'Lucy Lane' commemorative sign for Willard in honor of retiring principal Matt Lucey.
At its April 15 meeting the Concord School Committee approved several consent and business items, including acceptance of a $50,000 donation for Bruce Freeman Trail design, approval of quarterly budget transfers, and a PTG-funded commemorative sign to honor Willard principal Matt Lucey.
The chair introduced a late addition to the consent agenda: acceptance of a $50,000 donation to underwrite the trail design work and allow the volunteer group to put out a design RFQ. Staff said the donation will be held and used to support a landscape design RFQ and that the volunteer group anticipates additional fundraising of roughly $400,000–$500,000 for subsequent project phases. Committee members discussed coordination with state landowners and other agencies. The committee approved the donation by roll-call vote.
Later in the meeting the business officer presented quarterly transfers and year-to-date budget adjustments through April 10, including updated transportation reimbursements, circuit-breaker projections for special education reimbursement and increases in fixed charges such as property and liability insurance. Committee members moved and seconded approval of the transfers, and the motion passed.
The PTG proposed a wooden 'Lucy Lane' sign to be placed on a paved neighborhood path behind Willard as a permanent recognition of Matt Lucey; the sign would be crafted by a local signmaker and paid for by the PTG. Committee members discussed hydrant clearance, durability and exact placement. The committee approved the proposed site and the signage plan by voice vote.
Finally, the committee moved to enter executive session to discuss collective bargaining strategy with the Concord Teachers Association and education support professionals under Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 30A, Section 21(a)(3).
