Concord Public Schools staff and preschool PTG representatives briefed the School Committee on April 15 about the district’s integrated preschool program, describing full enrollment, curriculum work and near-term facility needs.
Angel and Kate Jesmon, the preschool’s early childhood coordinator, said the program runs five classrooms at Ripley and serves roughly 70 students in a mix of special-education placements and tuition-paying general-education slots. "We're currently, full for next year," they said, noting community slots are filled.
Jesmon outlined curricular and enrichment highlights: a sing-along family event, monthly visits from the Concord librarian, and adoption of the Hegarty phonemic-awareness program funded through a PRISM ELA grant that supports pre-K–3. The team also reported a grant application to the Concord Education Fund for more inclusive gym equipment and continuing visits from the therapy dog Ivy.
Committee members asked about the Ripley facility’s condition and outdoor space, given concurrent town land-use work that could affect the building’s future. Committee members urged preschool staff to assemble a clear "wish list" of space and program needs so educators’ priorities can inform any site-selection or reuse discussion. Staff said they have been involved with town working groups and would prepare a list for future planning discussions.
The presentation emphasized the program’s role as an early entry point into district special-education services and as a model of inclusive programming; staff said they have not needed to send preschoolers out of district in many years because of in-house capacity and expertise.
