Council approves framing bid for Dream Playground restrooms; community fundraising set for Oct. 18

Harlan City council approved a bid limited to interior restroom walls, rafters and finish work for the Grandma B's Dream Playground restroom reimagining on Sept. 16. The council emphasized that the bid covered only a portion of the restroom work (interior walls and rafters), with other trades and contractors stepping forward to donate labor and materials.
During council discussion, a member clarified that the bid was not for the entire restroom build but for the framing and related finishes; the council voted to approve the recommended contractor for that scope. Later, a public commenter provided a fuller community update: Patriot's Choice will do site flat work and concrete for free; Rose Masonry offered block work at 50% off; Petche Mechanical is providing electrical at a significant discount; Alpha Omega is donating plumbing work at minimal cost; and Elevate Roofing is donating the roof in full. The commenter called the collection of local contractor contributions "an amazing group of contractors" and urged continued volunteer support.
Fundraising for the project continues: the last scheduled fundraiser will be Oct. 18 at the Vets Auditorium. Doors open at 5:00 p.m.; events include a pizza-puzzle contest and a hot-dog-eating contest with team and entry fees as announced at city hall. Organizers asked for volunteers and community turnout to help finalize the playground project.
The framing bid motion was made and approved by roll call.
