Colfax County approves $40,000 toward City of Raton ambulance

Colfax County commissioners voted to provide $40,000 to the City of Raton toward an ambulance the city is having built, funding that will come from the MCMC permanent health care fund.
County staff told the commission that the ambulance is expected to arrive in May or June and that the request came from Raton. "We received a request from City of Raton to fund an additional $40,000 towards the purchase of an ambulance that they're currently having built," staff said during the presentation.
Several commissioners supported the purchase while asking for clarifications on the memorandum of understanding and future payment structure. One commissioner said he would prefer a reimbursable arrangement for future requests — "instead of giving 80% upfront, I'd rather give 20% than get the 80" — so the county could retain funds and earn interest before disbursing the bulk of any grant.
Commissioners also confirmed the county's EMS support covers unincorporated areas; staff noted the ambulance service covers a wide portion of Colfax County and at times operates across county lines when neighboring jurisdictions lack personnel.
After brief discussion, a motion to approve the MOU and funding passed on a roll call vote.
The commission did not set new long-term policy during the vote; commissioners said they will revisit whether ongoing funding for EMS support is sustainable when the multi-year support period ends.
