The Nelson County Board of Supervisors on Jan. 13 approved two real estate tax-exemption renewals and deferred action on a third amid questions over historical agreements.
Commissioner of Revenue Kimberly Goff reviewed three applications renewed for tax-exempt status. The board approved tax-exempt status for Piedmont Habitat for Humanity, Inc. and for Wintergreen Nature Foundation by roll-call votes. The Wintergreen parcel under consideration includes roughly 1,422.89 acres that staff noted already lie in a conservation easement and are assessed at a reduced rate for land-use purposes.
The Synchronicity Foundation application prompted more debate. Goff presented background including a 2002 tax-exempt-use agreement between Synchronicity and county officials. One supervisor voiced concern about granting a new exemption without current documentation of the organization’s present activities; another argued the 2002 settlement created a clear precedent. After discussion a motion to deny the Synchronicity exemption was withdrawn and the board agreed to seek further review—potentially including legal advice—and to act before tax bills are issued, effectively tabling immediate action on that application.
The board did not take final action on Synchronicity at the Jan. 13 meeting; staff was directed to provide additional information and counsel input prior to a future vote.
Votes and motions are reflected in the official meeting record.
