Summary
A restaurant owner testified to the House Committee on Natural Resources that recent tax refunds allowed them to remodel, fix broken equipment and ease staff hardship, saying the refunds put decision-making 'back in our hands.'
A local restaurant owner told members of the House Committee on Natural Resources that recent tax refunds allowed them to close for a day, remodel their business and fix equipment that improved safety and profitability.
The restaurant owner said they run “a very small restaurant on the other side of the river in Arlington” and described struggling over the past few years. “Watching our staff… light up when they see their tax refunds this year has just been amazing,” the owner said, crediting the refunds with easing staff financial pressure.
The owner urged lawmakers to let people keep and decide how to spend their refunds. “We also, were able to do some really cool things in the restaurant this year,” the owner said, adding that returning funds gave them the opportunity to repair broken items and replace needed equipment. The owner said those repairs will make the business more profitable and make the workplace safer for staff.
As an example of household priorities, the owner noted everyday needs such as home HVAC repairs and argued individuals know their own needs better than a representative could. They thanked the committee for the opportunity to speak and for what they described as returning money to taxpayers that allowed the business to invest in itself.
The committee did not take a formal vote during the public comment period; the owner’s remarks closed their allotted time.
