Commission receives zoning‑code education on property development standards; workshop announced

The Santa Fe Springs Planning Commission received an educational presentation on property development standards as part of the ongoing zoning code update on March 16.
Assistant Director of Community Development Vince Velasco explained that property development standards set rules for setbacks, building heights, lot coverage and parking; he also described design standards such as landscaping, lighting, building materials and screening. Velasco said standards guide review, protect neighborhood character and provide predictability for property owners and developers.
Commissioners asked questions about parking impacts, accessory dwelling units and how exceptions (for example ADU or specific design standards) could affect lot coverage and front‑yard landscaping. Commissioner Cervantes raised concerns about whether new rules could reduce front landscaping to provide more driveway space for parking; Velasco said exceptions and maximum lot coverage rules could be considered and that detailed code language will be part of the administrative draft later this summer.
Velasco also reminded the commission and public to attend a zoning code update workshop on Wednesday at the city library at 6:00 p.m., where staff will discuss residential landscaping, industrial design standards and signage.
No formal action was taken; the session was educational to prepare commissioners for future code language review.
