Cherokee County approves budget revisions, capital projects and firefighter grants

The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners on Jan. 20 approved multiple budget revisions and capital-project measures, including funding for school and college roofs, a large furnishings contract for a senior facility and grants and equipment funding for volunteer fire departments.
Commissioner Cal Stiles moved to use Article 46 sales tax fund balance to complete a roof project at Tri-County Community College ($114,306.90); Commissioner Mark Stiles moved a separate budget revision to purchase a new commercial washing machine for the Cherokee County Detention Center ($18,547). Both motions were adopted unanimously. CFO Candy Anderson said sales tax refunds and interest on project funds were expected to cover the cost of furnishings for the Senior/VA facility.
The board approved new fees for Cherokee County Health Department SPIKEVAX vaccinations and accepted a PBI, Inc. proposal to furnish the new Senior/VA facility for $344,906.23. Commissioners also approved $18,188.41 in additional funds for scope changes at EMS Station 2, adopted a Capital Project Ordinance and an engineering services agreement with REI Engineers to replace the roof at Andrews Elementary School, and approved a $31,320 replacement freezer for the county detention center. Commissioner Ben Adams moved and the board adopted all items by unanimous votes unless noted otherwise.
The board reinstated an Administrative Assistant position at EMS (pay grade 62) following the retirement of the Emergency Services Director, which County Manager Randy Wiggins said will create net savings in the department’s restructured staffing. The board also approved a $16,000 contingency-driven renovation of the old first-floor courtroom to create permanent office space for Juvenile Justice and Guardian ad Litem.
