Summary
Custer County Board of Health approved a variance to permit a vault privy (campground-style outhouse) on a remote 5.41-acre Faust Veil parcel, citing lack of water and electricity and difficult terrain; the measure passed unanimously.
The Custer County Board of Health voted March 31 to grant a variance allowing a vault privy on a remote 5.41-acre Faust Veil parcel where there is no water or electricity.
Staff said Seifert Enterprises brought the request and that soil evaluator Eric Seifert evaluated the site. The requested structure is a locked, solid-door, campground-style vault privy with pump-out access; staff said it was preferred to a portable unit given the terrain and the site's remoteness. "It's going to be locked and it would have, you know, solid doors and like a outhouse," said Jolene, the staff member who presented the item.
Board members discussed that the property is used only a few times per year and that a vault privy is an improvement over no facility in the absence of water and electricity. A board member moved to accept the variance, noting the installation would be an upgrade and appropriate for the terrain. The board recorded three ayes and approved the variance.
Staff recorded the parcel size at 5.41 acres and said the privy would be located roughly 50 feet from the cabin with pump-out access. No public comment was recorded on the item.
