St. Joseph council approves unpaid leave for Officer Hohner, extends insurance continuation

City staff presented a personnel request asking the St. Joseph City Council to approve an unpaid leave of absence for Officer Hohner after the officer exhausted Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) protections.
David (staff) said the officer requested leave beginning Feb. 19, 2025, through Aug. 8, 2025, subject to changing conditions, and that the city’s personnel policy allows the council to authorize unpaid leave beyond the 30 days the city administrator may approve. He also said the city could continue to pay its portion of health, dental and life insurance for up to 90 days with council approval.
A council member moved to approve the unpaid leave request and another council member seconded. The council voted 'aye' and the motion carried, approving the leave and the insurance continuation as requested.
