Sheriff honors deputy for ice‑rescue, raises camera and 287(g) proposals

Mabey described the March 8 incident in which two people fell through ice while visiting the county and said Sergeant/Deputy Call was first on scene. "They are trained to run towards danger," Call said, adding he was proud of the coordinated response by volunteers and emergency personnel.
Mabey told the board that ICRMP (the county insurer) waived a $50,000 additional bill after a recent successful inspection. He also said he had forwarded a memorandum of understanding (MOU) from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security concerning the 287(g) program for the board’s review and possible approval at a later meeting.
On traffic‑surveillance technology, Mabey described license‑plate‑reader cameras that check plates against databases for stolen or wanted vehicles and said the county is considering installations in Soda Springs and Grace; he said the technology has helped solve kidnappings, homicides and property crimes in other jurisdictions. The board did not vote on procurement or on the 287(g) MOU at the meeting.
The sheriff also raised a personnel pay question: a career‑ladder pay increase request for an employee, Dulcie Wright, was held pending clarification of job status and payroll/PERSI issues, and the board deferred payment pending resolution.
