Commission approves Miqfa cultural center and mikvah site plan with conditions

The Oak Park Planning Commission approved the site plan for a new two‑story cultural center and mikvah at 14850 Maken Street after a staff presentation and brief remarks from a congregational representative.

Planning staff described the proposed building as a two‑story facility that will include a small library and a women's mikvah on the first floor, a men's mikvah in the basement, a youth activity area and office space on the second floor. Staff said the site plan "meets the zoning ordinance requirements with conditions" but recommended the applicant obtain variances from the Zoning Board of Appeals for north and rear setbacks, impervious surface coverage, off‑street parking spaces and the intensity of one wall‑mounted light.

The commission invited the rabbi to speak. When asked whether the mikvah would serve only the congregation, the rabbi said it is "primarily" for the congregation but "it's open to anyone who wants to come," noting limited service during days when driving is restricted.

With no public objections, a commissioner moved and another seconded the motion to approve the site plan subject to staff conditions. The commission then approved the recommendation by roll call; the motion carried.

Next steps for the applicant include securing the cited variances and meeting the eight staff conditions identified in the planning report before building permits are issued.
