Committee clarifies leggings, tights and stockings policy; keeps district color list

The St. Mary Parish uniform committee clarified March 25 that leggings, tights and stockings are not acceptable substitute uniform pants and that only solid white, black, brown, navy blue or khaki-tan stockings/tights/leggings may be worn to accompany a uniform bottom.
Staff read the existing policy and described a proposal that would let schools determine color and, in some wording, the permissible type. Several committee members objected to letting each school set its own color list, saying that variation across schools would confuse students and parents who move between campuses.
"If we know that we have these same colors throughout and this is what a uniform should look like within St. Mary Parish, I like having just those colors," said Shannon Hoffower, who noted the difficulty that high student mobility creates for families.
A motion to retain the district color list and tighten the title and description to include "stockings, tights, or leggings" as a single category carried after discussion. The committee emphasized that leggings/tights are not pants and that the policy language would be tightened to avoid ambiguity.
Next steps: staff will produce clarified handbook language and correct the title/description to explicitly list stockings, tights and leggings together.
