Committee restores school-level authority on undershirt colors in handbook language

The St. Mary Parish School Board's uniform committee voted March 25 to restore language requiring undershirts worn under uniform tops to be of the uniform color designated by each school.
Staff told the committee the requirement had been inadvertently dropped during a handbook update. Mister Holmes read the original language and said the intent was for each school to designate acceptable undershirt colors so principals could maintain consistent appearance at their campus.
"We're giving that authority back to the schools," Holmes said about the proposal to let schools specify undershirt color. Committee members discussed allowing white or gray as practical options for elementary and middle schools with high student mobility. Lauren Rentro said many middle schools had been using white undershirts and would welcome gray as an option.
After clarifying language for handbook insertion ("Any long or short sleeve undershirt worn under uniform shirts must be of the uniform color designated by the school."), the committee moved, seconded and adopted the change. Committee members asked staff to draft clarified handbook wording so principals and parents understand enforcement expectations.
Next steps: staff will prepare precise handbook text and circulate it for review.
