The Sawyer County Board debated a request from a seed company to remove quick-claim deed guarantees on a lowland parcel that was once county forest. County staff reported that the parcel had low public access, limited hunting and fishing use, and that wild rice had not been produced there for some time.
Mister Marker, presenting the request, said staff and the county forester inspected the property and found limited public use and difficult access. A board member asked whether the reserved rights were intended to ensure public access for hunting and fishing; another expressed concern that wild rice gathering might be affected. Mister Buckles raised an issue about a nearby condemned dam and culverts and said local town authorities had limited capacity to replace large culvert structures.
The buyer was reported to have reserved $50,000 for culvert repairs in connection with the sale, according to committee notes cited in the discussion. After questions and requests for follow-up, Miss Carreon moved to table the request for one month so the county could obtain missing information and contact the buyer and realtor directly; Mister Buckles seconded the motion and it carried.
What’s next: The board asked staff to follow up with the buyer and realtor, confirm culvert/dam repair plans and provide more detail on historic public use (wild rice, access and fish habitat) before the board takes further action.
