The council authorized an MOU with Liberty Union High School District to refresh six utility boxes with student artwork, approved related budget amendments and praised the students’ designs.
The Brentwood City Council on March 31 approved a memorandum of understanding with the Liberty Union High School District to refresh and add artwork to six utility boxes as part of the Public Art & Design Academy (PADA) project.
Recreation Supervisor Lindsey Pinnell presented staff’s recommendation to approve an MOU (staff cited $8,500 for the MOU) and described a related budget amendment that staff summarized as $11,000 in total to cover materials, artist compensation for box painting and a small allocation for a ribbon-cutting event. Pinnell said students from the PADA class had submitted designs and that the project would give students a large-scale public-art experience.
Students described designs titled "Blooming Day," "Blooming Night," "Mount Diablo," "Farmer’s Market," and other themes that emphasize Brentwood’s agricultural landscape, pollinators and community culture. "Painting the boxes is proven to reduce graffiti and maintenance costs while increasing community pride," one student said.
Council members praised the students’ creativity and the public-art program. A motion to adopt the staff recommendation and approve the MOU carried by voice vote.
Staff will return final contract documents and proceed with box preparation and scheduling for painting with participating students and teachers.
