Resident pitches dog park at unused Father Padilla softball field

Courtney Naylor told the Harrington City Commission she wants to convert an underused softball field near Father Padilla Park into a dog park that would serve residents and visitors and provide a safe place for dog socialization and exercise.

Naylor said metal play and agility equipment would last far longer than plastic and suggested keeping existing dugouts and fences where feasible. She estimated materials and equipment costs would be under $10,000, asked for city assistance removing an unusable concession building and for plumbing to add a dual human/dog water fountain, and proposed using maroon benches and trash cans consistent with Harrington’s park theme.

Commissioners and staff encouraged Naylor to pursue small grants, community donations and to coordinate with staff on demolition and plumbing estimates. Staff agreed to evaluate what could be covered from parks budgets and to route larger demolition or fencing work through grant matches or capital requests.

Quotes from the meeting include Naylor’s pitch that a dog park “would be very meaningful to both not only the community members, but also visitors of Harrington and the pets of Harrington.” Commissioners asked for a cost estimate for removing structures and pursuing dog-bag dispensers and trash cans as near-term, low-cost steps.
