Local chiefs ask county for radio demonstration after intermittent paging, response delays

Fire and emergency medical services leaders told the Daniels County commission Nov. 17 that the county’s radio/paging system has shown intermittent failures that delayed or muffled pages and made it hard to confirm responses.
At the meeting, a fire chief (speaker 7) described incidents where pages produced no voice, then later pages produced audio, and described occasions when crews were leaving a scene and the dispatcher did not immediately respond. The chief asked that vendor staff (Redtail) demonstrate call procedures and trunking behavior in the presence of county staff and the two fire chiefs so everyone can observe how the system operates and identify whether problems are trunking‑related, operator error, or equipment failure.
Commissioners and staff agreed that the system had been reported as working in prior tests but that recurring, intermittent problems have prompted the request for an on‑site demonstration. One commissioner suggested scheduling vendor personnel and the chiefs to run through live calls and paging sequences so the board can better understand whether supplemental antennas or configuration changes are needed.
No procurement or system change was approved at the meeting. Commissioners requested follow‑up information and a demonstration so they can evaluate any needed repairs, antenna additions, or replacement radios.
